Crystal Kit

Theses were the crystals I modeled as a kit for Deifos. This was a fun kit to set up as I was able to work with the material artist and learn a few interesting tricks in Substance Painter. 



Glowing affect in Substance
When working on the kit, we knew we wanted the crystals to glow so we wondered if they should have an emissive or fake it using a gradient. In the image above you will see how I tried to apply the gradient affect. The results were cool in substance but, in game it made the asset look dull and the emissive map was not working properly. So I decided on a curvature map that would be adjusted in engine and adjusted with the emissive scalar channel.

Adding Details

The last few steps were to add in some details and get the appropriate color. Our material artist created a unique rock material that added small surface details. I wanted some of the high poly details baked in to support the mesh as well as the material. 


And the end result wre these cool crystals that could be used for large structures and set dressing.
